When I opened UA-cam today to find some fresh riffage, little did I know that my attention would be grabbed by a nerdy pun and an AI album cover. Even less, that it would be a Sabbath/Fu-esque band that didn't even exist! Excellent record, and I think you should start considering your follow up and going on tour. I would pay to see this music performed live.

DO YA WANNA GET FLOCKED? Down in the Dumps is the new album by my new fake band Flocker 109. Though "new" is a stretch. Going by the artwork it should be obvious that this is heavily Nirvana inspired. But it goes deeper than that. I started dabbling in songwriting around 1992 but I was primarily a drummer so most of my song writing was just sitting around writing awful lyrics, which I covered extensively in the Squeaky Chair podcast. 1993 was when I moved from drums to bass almost exclusively and started going deeper intro trying to write songs. Writing on bass made the songs even weirder than I meant. Later in 93 or into 94 I finally got my own guitar and could go even further. I had many, many cassettes filled with many, many awful songs. And all of my early songwriting was happening right in the middle of Grunge. So the vast majority of the songs were awful Nirvana or grunge ripoff songs with terrible lyrics of me trying to pretend I was sad, depressed and filled with teenage agnst when I was none of those things. To give you an idea, the first song is called Angora for no reason other than Kurt Cobain used to wear angora sweaters. And the song Imbecil is named that because Nirvana had a song named Dumb. A while back I was going through a bunch of these old songs and started thinking it would be funny if I re-recorded them now, 30-ish years later and actually tried to make them into something. Not changing anything. No fixing the dumb lyrics or anything. Not every song is strictly a Nirvana rip off. Some are more regular old grunge. The last song Carbonate was me trying to write a Rollins Band style song. Also there are actually two new songs but I still tried to write terrible lyrics for them. I'm not saying which they are, you'll just have to guess. Doing this was a bit harder than I imagined. Over the years I have tried to do my best at figuring out how to sing without being a good singer. Back then I had no idea about things like keys or fitting the melody to what I was capable of. Trying to go back and record vocals like this was a killer. Several nights of yelling and screaming left me unable to speak for 2 weeks. But I got through it and it's finally finished. Nearly 10 years after the last PFD album I accidentally wrote three songs that didn't really fit my other projects. Suddenly it started feeling like I should finally record the long unanticipated return of PFD. But only the three songs I had, wasn't gonna try to force out a whole album. I always change, of course. PFD was back but didn't at all sound like the last PFD album. Much more grunge this time I think. Actually all three songs kinda sounded totally different. I just can't help myself. I have to spread my wings. lol Recording wise I thought it mostly came out pretty good. I started working on this around the time Valerie Harper announced she had three months to live. I figured she'd die right around the time I'd be done with it so I called the EP "3 Songs for Valerie". Being totally unappreciative of my work she ended up living for 7 more years. 0:00 - 1. For the third, and so far final, full length album from my fake acoustic countryish band Eugene I decided to do a covers album. Which meant it was time for another incident to follow up PFD's Pancake Incident. Okra felt Iike a pretty "country" ingredient. And like my other cover albums, it's hit or miss. I THINK it has slightly more hits than misses but now that I'm looking at the track list I'm not sure anymore. lol I tell you this, you listen to my early PFD albums and it's pretty shocking to think that idiot would one day cover Glen Campbell. One thing's for sure, it has the best new cover art. My personal artist Mr. Bing sure knocked this one out of the park. I have had the next Eugene album written and ready to go for years now. After taking another break from PFD I came back and I was a man on a mission this time. PFD never lived up to my idea of what I wanted the band to sound like and I was determined to finally get it right. Catch Em Fast, Kill Em Slow is far and away my favorite PFD album. It is the only one I feel truly nailed what I wanted it to be, a melding of my influences of hard rock, punk, grunge, metal. Usually that just resulted in scattershot albums that didn't fit together. The other albums felt like here's some meat, here's a carrot and here's a potato. This one felt like all those ingredients went in the crockpot and made some a stew. It's heavier and more aggressive than any of the previous PFD albums. Even my poor vocals only managed to totally ruin one song, Future Is. The downside is the mix. I was really sick of the MIDI drums I had been using up until this point. They were so limiting. I couldn't do fills because the sounds would clip into each other. I couldn't change the sound to fit different projects. I loved them at first and now I hated them. So I bought myself an electric drumset. The electric drums brought all new problems I had never tackled before. The real problem was that I had already recorded this entire album before I got the drums. Now I was trying to go in backwards and do the drums last instead of first. Without knowing anything about how to use them yet. It was a major pain. The final result ended up feeling truly like my St Anger. "This would sound great if it wasn't for that snare." Every time I listen to it it's sort of a shock to the system at first. It takes a while to get used to the recording enough not to hate it. It's a shame because I love how the guitars and most of the vocals sound, but those damn drums just aren't right. But at the end of the day, as a PFD album, I was thrilled with how it came out. I felt like I had nailed my idea of what PFD should be so I decided to move on. Not For Nothing is the third release and second full album from my sort of country project Eugene. This one is my favorite Eugene and better nails the idea of what I was going for. One of my favorite albums over all. I don't even have much to say unlike the last Eugene album. The Red Skeletons may have started as a Misfits inspired horror punk band but in-between the first and second album things changed a bit. For the first time in my life I had finally became a Metallica fan. When it came time to write this album I was listening to a lot of Master of Puppets and Kill Em All. Listening to this album there could be nothing more obvious. It became less punk and more metal with more than one "yeeaahhs" thrown in for good measure. At least it's not 19 songs long like the first Red Skeletons. My wrists would've really hated that. And that was that for The Red Skeletons. Or was it?? Sigh. Oh boy, here we go. The album where I get canceled. It was fun while it lasted guys. After doing the first Eugene E.P. I really wanted to do more. The country stuff had been surprisingly fun to do, it was new and exciting. I decided to do a full album. I was, of course, going to make changes. I really wanted to do something different with Eugene. The thing is... I HATE country music. Eugene would be an anti-country country band. Country for people who hate country. I wanted to try to meld country with hard rock and punk. The music would be the mix of country and hard rock, the attitude and lyrics is where the punk would come in. I got it into my head that I wanted to push people's buttons with the lyrics and piss people off. I didn't want Eugene to be like modern radio country songs about trucks and beers and dogs. It's funny how time changes though isn't it? 10 years ago I had no real fears of posting this. I looked forward to making people mad and arguing with them. Today I'm like please don't take this stuff the wrong way and get mad at me. LOL. Any time I post stuff from this album I end up writing up the longest explanation to try to explain my thinking with it before somebody shoots me. The one song that probably exemplifies this album the most is Country Song. Which is basically a very sarcastic version of what modern country sounds like to me in my head. A bunch of rednecks drinking, hunting, beating their wives and being racist. I remember the first time I posted it I was wondering if people wouldn't get the sarcasm and get offended. Instead it went the other way. The rednecks found it, didn't get the sarcasm and were NOT offended. They loved it. Like I accidentally wrote their theme song. Very unforeseen circumstances. But then there's the song that truly inspires all this explanation... F-words, R-words and N-words. At the time I was writing all this, Brad Paisley put out that god awful anti-racism song with LL Cool J that was so embarrassing they swept it under the rug as fast as possible. Inspired by that goofy song I decided to write my own anti-racism country song... but like I said, I was trying to push buttons and piss people off. It may be a song against racism but it's gonna do it in a sarcastic and offensive way. It's going to be the most racist anti-racist song ever. When I finished the song I let some friends hear it to see if they would get the sarcasm and humor or would I get shot. I did not get shot. I let a Canadian Liberal friend listen to it and asked him if he thought people would be offended or would they get what I was trying to do. He said it was fine. And that was good enough for me because he was Canadian, the most liberal of liberals. I uploaded it and nobody ever complained. But over the past 10 years, every once in a while I re-upload it somewhere and I'm like oh boy, this might be the time. Now here we go again. Uploading my albums to UA-cam has brought more hits than any other place I've used. Surely I'm gonna get in trouble this time.
